About Secretary Yellen: Dr. Janet Louise Yellen served as the 78th Secretary of the Treasury of the United States. An economist by training, Yellen took office after almost 50 years in academia and public service. She is the first person in American history to lead the White House Council of Economic Advisors, the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department, and the first woman to lead the latter two.

Yellen was born in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn in 1946, to Anna Ruth, an elementary school teacher, and Julius, a family physician.

In 1967, Yellen graduated from Brown University, later earning her Ph.D. at Yale. She was an assistant professor at Harvard before joining the Federal Reserve Board in 1976.

Professor Emeritus Yellen joined the faculty at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1980, becoming the Eugene E. and Catherine M. Trefethen Professor of Business and professor of economics. Her research in labor and macroeconomics included influential work with her husband, George Akerlof, demonstrating that firms paying higher wages often benefit from greater productivity, lower turnover and stronger employee morale.

President Bill Clinton appointed Yellen to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in 1994, naming her chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers in 1997.

During her third tenure with the Federal Reserve in 2004, this time as president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, Yellen spotted a worrying economic trend 鈥� a bubble in home values. When the housing bubble popped in 2008, she helped manage the resulting financial crisis and recession. In 2010, President Obama appointed Yellen vice chair of the Federal Reserve, and she later served as chair from 2014 to 2018.

In December 2020, then-President-elect Joe Biden nominated Yellen to the post of Treasury secretary, saying, 鈥淪he has spent her career focused on unemployment and the dignity of work. She understands what it means to people and their communities when they have good, decent jobs.鈥�

Before joining the Treasury Department, Yellen was a Distinguished Fellow in Residence with the Economic Studies Program at the Brookings Institution. From 2020-21, she acted as president of the American Economic Association. She is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Council on Foreign Relations, and a founding member of the Climate Leadership Council.

An elected alumni fellow with Yale Corp. from 2000-06, Yellen has been part of several advisory boards, including Bloomberg New Economic Forum, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget and Fix the Debt Coalition, and the Washington Center for Equitable Growth Steering Committee.

Yellen has been recognized for her contributions to economics and public service with honorary doctorates from Bard 海角直播, Brown, the London School of Economics and more, as well as the Wilbur Cross Medal.
